Going from Burnt-out to Business Owner, What is ‘The Great Resignation’?

Imagine your dream job, the one you wanted when you were younger and anything seemed possible…

Now answer me this, does your current career fit with those ideals and aspirations you once had?

And are you satisfied with your current career path?

If not, you aren’t alone. As it turns out, this is a pretty common feeling.

A lot of people aren’t happy with their current job roles – something that has only been highlighted by the pandemic. Many people are now in the process of making that change, in a movement known as The Great Resignation.

The Great Resignation

This is a time of change for a lot of people and the great resignation signifies that. People are quitting long-term jobs on a mass scale, and are reevaluating what they want in their lives.

People are quitting long-term jobs on a mass scale, and are reevaluating what they want in their lives.

In February 2022, ‘The National Australian Bank’ (NAB) conducted a behavioural insight analysis. This report identified some key factors that were leading to people to quit their jobs all over Australia.

“The Great Resignation is a phenomenon that predicts people will voluntarily leave their jobs in record numbers as the pandemic encourages a rethink of careers, work-life balance and long-term goals”

Why are so Many People Resigning?

There are always a number of reasons one may leave their job but with the pandemic, we’re seeing an increase in feelings of burnout, coupled with a poor work-life balance.

These types of environments can make for unpleasant workplaces, places that nobody would aspire to be a part of – I know I wouldn’t.

So, it’s not really a big surprise that so many people are choosing to quit their jobs. The last few years have left people feeling like they need a new start. And for many people that new start involves wanting to work less or start their own business venture.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Many workers are reluctant to return to the workplace after working from home for such an extended period of time.

The pandemic has changed most people’s perspective on life, and for many people, this has made them rethink if working in an office is the right choice for them.

In fact, 30% of people surveyed by NAB said that they were not being personally fulfilled in their jobs, and an additional 20% said that they wanted a fresh start

And working from home does have significant benefits.

It creates flexibility in your working hours, saves time and money on commuting to work, and can often be a more comfortable working environment.

Change Can be a Good Thing.

While employers do have to fill the gaps left behind by people leaving these positions, this movement has been a positive change for a lot of people.

Starting a new career or business can be challenging, but for many people, it is the right path.

A path that many Australians are now choosing to take.

In fact, there has been a significant increase in the number of businesses entering the market in the years that align with the Great Resignation.

The number of operating businesses in Australia had an increase of 87,806 or 3.8% from 2020 to 2021 as new businesses entered the market. This shows the change in priorities as more people than ever are looking for more flexible working environments – and when you run your own business, you often get to make your own working hours.

Who Runs the World?

As Beyonce once said Girls Run The World.

The number of women starting businesses has increased by 46% over the last two decades, yet the overall proportion of female versus male business owners has only increased by only 3% in this time. This means that only 35% of small businesses in Australia are operated by women. How crazy is that?!

But don’t let this discourage you from taking the leap and entering the business world.

Female entrepreneurship is growing, and maybe sometime soon girls will be running the (business) world too.

Coaching = Success

Entering into anything new can be frightening.

And faced with the uncertainty of what is to come, you may be looking for help or advice.

And for many women, a must-have resource when entering the entrepreneurial world is a Business Coach.

A Business Coach helps guide the way and teaches you the best practices to make your business a success. She understands what it will take to grow your business and shows you what you need to do to avoid costly mistakes. And best of all, when you work with a female business coach, she understands what you need to do to survive and thrive as a female business owner.

Going into a business without the knowledge or experience of a seasoned entrepreneur is difficult and it can be lonely. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.

And it is a lot easier when you have a coach to provide frameworks and support throughout your journey and to keep you accountable and motivated when the learning curve feels steep.

A coach can be just what you need to help you build a successful business – you just have to find the right one.
